Set in the picturesque stone-built village of Buckden at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the tearooms at West Winds offer home-cooked specialities that combine Yorkshire tradition with local, seasonal, organic and Fairtrade ingredients wherever possible. The variety of meals, snacks and refreshments on offer means that West Winds is no ordinary tearoom, but a restaurant, coffee shop and cafe too. It's the ideal place for eating out in the Yorkshire Dales, on special occasions or just as you're passing by...
West Winds is not just the perfect place for food and drink in Upper Wharfedale. We offer homely bed and breakfast accommodation with a distinct Dales flavour. There's so much beautiful countryside and classic Yorkshire Dales scenery to explore around Buckden and Upper Wharfedale that West Winds can provide a great base for a long weekend or short break, but our position on the Dales Way, Inn Way and Lady Anne Clifford Way also makes the location just right for a one-night B&B stop.
...BBC Look North...
In April 2009 BBC Look North came to West Winds Yorkshire Tearooms to mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Dales Way long distance footpath, which runs from Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere through Buckden. Legendary presenter Harry Gration (centre in picture, seen with Lynn Thornborrow and Stephen Hounsham from West Winds) was filmed enjoying some home-made Yorkshire curd tart in the tearooms. He said: “If you want a lovely overnight and a bit of a feast as well, this is the place for you.”
Part of the Look North feature can be viewed on the You-Tube website.
...Home-made at West Winds...
The tearooms take much of their character and charm from our 19th century Dales stone-cottage with its delightful tea-garden, set in a peaceful corner of Buckden against a timeless backdrop of buttercup meadows, dry-stone walls, fells and moors that are forever Yorkshire.
We are renowned for our cakes, all of which are home-made here at West Winds. We specialise in old fashioned favourites like Yorkshire curd tart, ginger parkin, custard tart, and sticky brandy fruitcake served with a wedge of Traditional Wensleydale cheese made locally at Hawes. Some of our recipes are over 100 years old, handed down from our own Yorkshire ancestors. At West Winds we cater for hearty appetites and our large Yorkshire puddings brimming with hotpot of Dales lamb or English vegetables are always popular. You can opt for traditional grilled gammon and eggs, with both coming from farms in Wharfedale, or choose from a range of healthy salads, tasty sandwiches and other dishes.
...Luxury Yorkshire Afternoon Tea...
Many people come to West Winds for Afternoon Tea, a traditional teatime spread that includes a choice of sandwiches, freshly baked scones and tempting cakes. We can now also offer the ultimate teatime experience: Luxury Yorkshire Afternoon Tea for two. Served on a three-tier china cake stand and including four different types of sandwich, scones with two fruit jams and fresh whipped double cream, four different Yorkshire cakes and unlimited tea or coffee, this deserves to be savoured and lingered over. Especially when it is rounded off with a box of West Winds locally made chocolate truffles...
In the summer, you can enjoy Lunch, Afternoon Tea, High Tea, Sandwiches and Cakes, or just Tea or Coffee, outside in the tea-garden. We’re open Wednesday to Sunday from March to October. In winter we’re open at weekends in November and between Christmas and New Year, when there is a proper log fire inside to restore warmth. We’re also available for bookings for group meals and special occasions.
...Complimentary chocolates...
If you come to West Winds for bed and breakfast accommodation, you’ll be greeted with a pot of fine tea and home-made cake and find fresh flowers, complimentary locally made chocolates and a help-yourself bowl of organic fruit in your bedroom. In the morning, there's a choice of cooked and 'Dales continental' breakfasts to choose from. All for a price of £25-£33 per person, with attractive special offers.
...Best of Yorkshire Special Break...
For example, if you’re staying for two nights, you can save money through a Best of Yorkshire Special Break, which includes a Luxury Yorkshire Afternoon Tea for two in our tearooms or tea-garden. Drawing on the finest local produce available, this could be the highlight of your stay.
...Low Carbon Reward...
At West Winds, we think the environment is important. After all, it is the life support system for all of us. We want to do what we can on things like climate change. If you would like bed and breakfast accommodation at West Winds and are able to travel here all the way from your home town using public transport or a bicycle, you can claim a Low Carbon Reward, which gives you a second night absolutely free!
There are other special offers available too. If you are coming as a family or group and want to book all three bedrooms and have the place to yourselves for the night, you’ll get a significant discount.
...Call of the curlew...
Within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the village of Buckden is a fantastic place to visit. You can walk on the bleak moorland above to the call of the curlew and lapwing, wander down the riverside path to watch the distinctive dipper – the ‘white robin’ of the Dales – or simply relax, enjoy the peace and quiet and take in the dramatic scenery of austere fells, tumbling waterfalls, flower-rich meadows and valley-side ‘hanging’ ash woods.
Personally run by Lynn Thornborrow from an old Dales farming family, West Winds offers a warm welcome to those who want to experience food as it always should be and Yorkshire countryside at its finest. The Yorkshire Dales is an area that touches emotions and inspires devotion, even loyalty, from those who visit it. People return to Buckden and West Winds again and again. Come and see for yourself what draws them...
