...Bone china...

Alternatively, choose from our regular range of fresh salads, tasty sandwiches, filling omelettes and tea-time favourites like chocolate cake, deliciously gooey carrot cake, coffee and walnut cake, egg custard tart and scones with jam and cream. All washed down with fine teas, coffee or hot chocolate in bone china cups. (Please note our menu varies from day to day and that although we do our best to keep everything stocked up, all items are subject to availability.)

At West Winds we do our best to use locally produced, organic and Fairtrade food wherever feasible and we aim to make our meals and cakes as healthy and tasty as possible. There is usually an in-season special on the menu, using seasonal ingredients that are as fresh as things come.

...Tea garden...

You can relax in the tea-garden in warm weather, or warm yourself by our log fire inside when it’s cold. Come to see us for Cakes and Sandwiches, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, High Tea/Early Dinner or just tea or coffee, and stay for as long as you like. We don’t like to hurry people and there are always the latest copies of the Yorkshire Post and the Dalesman for you to browse, or even read from cover to cover...

If you enjoy our cakes, you can take away a Presentation Box of Yorkshire cakes tied with ribbon as a gift for a special occasion or a special person. Or you can simply eat them yourself when you get home, or even on the way home...

West Winds can also provide the perfect venue for a private group lunch, dinner or other special occasion, when we can relax our usual opening times and cater for your own particular needs. We’re not licensed to sell alcoholic drinks but you can bring your own favourite wine yourself. We’ll provide the glasses!

Sample items from our regular menu

Large Yorkshire pudding filled with Dales lamb hotpot, served with mint sauce. We use local lamb from Scale Hill Farm, a farm within the family at Rylstone near Skipton.

Large Yorkshire pudding filled with wild rabbit and herbs. Our rabbit comes from the Kilnsey Park Estate in Wharfedale.

Large Yorkshire pudding filled with fried onions and gravy. We make fresh gravy and fry freshly cut onions for every order.

Large Yorkshire pudding filled with casserole of seasonal vegetables in a tomato and herb sauce. As far as possible, we choose classic English vegetables that are in-season. Most of our vegetables are organic too.

Yorkshire cheese platter with wedges of four Yorkshire cheeses, salad and home-made coleslaw, served with home-made haverbread and apple and raisin chutney. With so many fine local cheeses available, this truly is a taste of Yorkshire. We use cheeses like Yorkshire Blue, Old York, Katy's White Lavender Ewe's Cheese, Wensleydale with Ginger, Blue Wensleydale, Smoked Wensleydale, Smoked Ribblesdale Goat Cheese, Swaledale and Coverdale. Haverbread is a traditional oatbread that was once a farmhouse staple across the Dales, made on the old kitchen range. It’s now hard to find but we make it at West Winds in our Aga. Our chutneys are made by a small family business at Stalling Busk near Semer Water.

Roast Yorkshire ham salad, with home-made coleslaw and home-made haverbread. Try our home-roasted ham from Bolton Park Farm on the Duke of Devonshire's estate in Wharfedale and taste the difference from supermarket ham...

Roast Yorkshire beef salad, with home-made coleslaw and home-made haverbread. Try our home-roasted beef from Bolton Park Farm on the Duke of Devonshire's estate in Wharfedale...

Grilled Yorkshire gammon steak and two fried eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes, served with freshly buttered bread. Our gammon comes from Bolton Park Farm on the Duke of Devonshire's estate in Wharfedale, and our free range eggs from Church Farm at Hubberholme, close to Buckden.

Children’s choice… Baked potato with home-made ‘baked beans’ in tomato sauce, topped with Cheddar cheese. We make our own ‘baked beans’ using a mixture of different types of bean. There is no added sugar or salt.

Children’s choice… Roast ham salad, eco-friendly tuna salad or Wallace and Gromit Real Wensleydale cheese salad. Our salads come in small sizes too. Our ham is real meat, home-roasted from farm joints; our tuna is rod-and-line caught in the Maldive Islands without threat to dolphins, sea birds, juvenile fish or other marine life; our Wensleydale cheese comes from the Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes and is the favourite cheese of those plasticine heroes from Wigan.

Freshly cut sandwiches, filled with home-roasted Yorkshire ham or beef, Wensleydale cheese, environmentally friendly tuna, egg mayonnaise with black pepper or crisp salad. Sandwiches are served on bread made with organic flour at Threaplands Farm Bakery at Cracoe and come with a salad or fruit garnish and Yorkshire-made parsnip crisps.

Traditional Yorkshire curd tart with currants and a hint of real lemons. Curd tart is one of our most distinctive and delicious desserts, with the recipe highly sought-after. It comes from an old recipe that originated in Leeds at least 100 years ago.

Traditional Yorkshire parkin. This is made with ginger, black treacle and oatmeal, again from an old Leeds recipe.

Rich brandy fruitcake, served with a wedge of local Wensleydale cheese. Our fruitcake is made to a Christmas cake recipe and is pretty much as rich as fruitcake gets… Eaten Yorkshire-fashion, bite-for-bite with Wensleydale cheese, or even at the same time, it provides an unforgettable taste.

Aga-baked scones with home-made fruit jam and butter or strawberry jam and fresh cream. Most mornings we bake our own scones, serving them with jam made at West Winds or locally at Stalling Busk and, for those looking for the ultimate scone experience, whipped double cream.

West Winds Traditional Afternoon Tea... This is another speciality. You can order a proper teatime spread all in one go, comprising any sandwich with salad garnish and Yorkshire parsnip crisps, plus scone with home-made jam and butter, plus any cake or pastry from our cake cabinet, and as much tea or coffee as you like!

Fairtrade tea, Earl Grey tea, organic Fairtrade green tea, peppermint tea, camomile tea. We don’t skimp on the teabags and provide extra hot water too.

Fairtrade organic ground coffee. Our coffee tastes fantastic and we serve it in individual cafetieres. Full caffeine or decaffeinated, as you prefer.

Green and Blacks hot chocolate. Proper hot chocolate, made with milk.

Please note that our menu varies from day to day and although we do our best to keep everything stocked up, all items are subject to availability.
